Chinese villagers eat dinosaur bones

BEIJING – Villagers in central China dug up a ton of dinosaur bones and boiled them in soup or ground them into powder for traditional medicine, believing they were from flying dragons and had healing powers.

Until last year, the fossils were being sold in Henan province as “dragon bones” at about 4 yuan (50 cents) per kilogram (2.2 pounds), scientist Dong Zhiming told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Dong, a professor with the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said when the villagers found out the bones were from dinosaurs they donated 200 kilograms (440 pounds) to him and his colleagues for research.

“They had believed that the ‘dragon bones’ were from the dragons flying in the sky,” he said.

The calcium-rich bones were sometimes boiled with other ingredients and fed to children as a treatment for dizziness and leg cramps. Other times they were ground up and made into a paste that was applied directly to fractures and other injuries, he said.

The practice had been going on for at least two decades, he said.

Dong was among a team of scientists who recently excavated in Henan’s Ruyang County an 60-foot-long plant-eating dinosaur, which lived 85 million to 100 million years ago. Local officials held a news conference Tuesday, showing off the find to the public for the first time.

Another two dinosaur fossils were being excavated in the area, which is rich in fossilized dinosaur eggs, Dong said.

Yeah, that’s apparently what’s going down — the iPhone will be over the Atlantic “in time for Christmas,” according to The Times. That is, assuming they can quickly localise its dialogue for easy manoeuvring in the UK market, aye guv’na? Oh, and Apple still has to sign the paperwork, too, so it isn’t necessarily over.

P.S. -Naw, doesn’t necessarily mean Vodafone is out — remember, they’re so freaking all over the place Apple might just get Vodafone distro somewhere else in the world.

Update: The piece also notes that Orange is the front-runner in France. As a reminder, German paper Rheinische Post reported that T-Mobile’s locked down the iPhone for Deutsche release. Apparently it’ll land for €450 (about $612) on November 1st. More as it develops. Congratulations, Europe, now you too can experience absolutely insane consumer hysteria that is an iPhone launch! YES! I’M IN!

Wimbledon is fun! Girls in cute outfits and boys throwing their rackets around. With the weather like it is, and us feeling slightly flu-y, we’ve been staying in, watching a lot of matches while curled up in bed with the heating on. Not a bad way to spend rainy days, I must say.

In the midst of the bad weather, I have also:

- updated the “about” page
- finally joined Facebook
- started reading Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray
- made my first to-heal-the-sick-chickensoup (it wasn’t bad!)

It’s sunny now (at eight in the evening), here’s hoping it’ll be this way tomorrow..

I wish I knew what the hell is going on with the bloody weather, but It doesn’t seem to know itself either.

We’ve had pretty much an equal measure of rain and sunshine today. By that, I mean it would rain for 10 minutes and then, the sun would emerge quite abruptly, blue skies, white clouds, the whole shebang. Then it would rain again. Then sun, then rain, then well.. you get the picture.

In fact, I’m watching Wimbledon right now, and they’re covering the court because of a stupid cloud burst. Freaking weather’s going Bipolar.

Am in the midst of doing my German homework now but I can’t help but say this:

I cannot, for the life of me, pronounce the German “r” – not without feeling that I might spit all over the table. It’s a harsh letter, rather like the French “r” (I think). To make things easier for myself, I’ve made up my own version: I just go a bit lower with my tongue, curling under, into almost a “w”. It sounds a bit silly but never mind.. What makes matters worse is I just realised that I’m carrying it over to English! Now I sound like this:

“Woodolf the Wed Nose Weindeer..”

Good gwief.
